Back to March 2015 Hawaii Adventure, Birds in Hawaii

First bird we saw was just outside the air port,  Zebra dove and we saw many everyday, always looking for a hand out.  We actually saw more birds then these but these are the ones I got pictures of and the most common.
Pigeons

This bird is called a Cattle egret.
They are a beautiful tall bird, about 20".

Jeff was trying to feed the Zebra Dove.  I think he finally did.  You can see the sparrows were the braver of the two.

These three were up in a tree as we sat at a picnic table having our Sunday morning devotions on Baptism.

This bird was very friendly.  It seemed like there were plenty of these white dove like birds all over.

State of  Hawaii considers O'ahu population threatened.

This is a Common fairy-tern, a Native seabird.   We were told they lay their eggs on a branch, not in a nest.  These close up pictures were from our hotel room patio.  Jeff actually touched one on its chest as we were sitting on our patio.  They seem very tame and are around people all the time.

People would be out in the park feeding the birds.

This 10 inch long legged bird is a Pacific golden Plover.  They say these fly over from Alaska every year, non stop.
This is a very tiny fast moving bird.  I was lucky to get a picture of one of 4 or 5 getting a drink from a water puddle.  It is only 3 or 4 inchs and called a Common Waxbill. It was introduced  to Hawaii in 1960's and native to Africa

Above is a immature Black crowned night-heron, below is the mature Black crowned night-heron.
They can get up to 25 inches.  They live by streams, ponds etc because they catch fish for food.

Here is a not so good two pictures of the Red-vented bulbul,  8 inchs and likes gardens, parks and forests. Native to India.

The Red-crested Cardinal,  about 7 inchs and native to South America.  All the birds were introduced to Hawaii, these cardinals in 1920's.

The Common Myna  native to India.   This bird first reminded me of a Robin but latter more like a Starling.  Messy aggressive birds that even eat from picnic tables when people are sitting close by.

This beautiful Peacock was at the Dole plantation,
just strutting around.

When you get out of the city, there are wild chickens all over.  Very pretty.   We saw lots on our North shore and farm tour.  This was a full "chicken family" with baby chicks.

I know these aren't birds but just had to share them since they were the only two that sat still long enough for a picture.  These geckos are very fast and good at hiding.

Hawaii has a lot of rainbows and we were lucky to see this one on the way to the airport.  They say there is usually a rainbow at least once a day and everything like licence plates etc. all have the rainbow on them as a State symbol.

I guess you have to be in the right area every day to spot these rainbows.  Not likely in the city with tall buildings surrounding us.  These always remind me of the promise God made not only to Noah but all people that He would save us and YES!  He DID by sending His Son Jesus.
